As an affordable and accessible means of communication, many people have realised that mobile phones are no longer just communication tools but those that are capable of providing additional integrated functions. In January 2012 we engaged our Facebook fans and Twitter followers with an intriguing question:

“Mobile phones are no longer a luxury item and have become a ubiquitous and essential part of our lives, radically changing the way we interact & communicate.

WHAT DO YOU USE YOUR MOBILE PHONE FOR OTHER THAN MAKING CALLS?

Everybody, when starting in a new organisation, takes a little time to really understand what it is all about, right? As the new Communication intern from the Amsterdam office, this is my case now! I’m working here for almost 4 weeks now, and I figured that it can be quite difficult, for those who like our concept but don’t work here, to have a clear picture of what we actually do, why we do it and how we do it…

For this reason, I think is a good idea to write my first blog post around the theme: What is it all about??

Any development agenda in Uganda must look beyond the city and for a simple reason, over 80% of the total population lives in rural areas.

Almost 70% of the world’s mobile phone subscribers are in the developing world. As an affordable and accessible means of communication, both men and women are realizing the potential of this technology to create economic opportunities and strengthen social networks in rural areas. The mobile phone is no longer just a communication tool but one that`s capable of providing additional integrated functions.

It sounds a bit like Virtual Insanity: your mobile phone's Second Life… But actually, you can easily find some horror elements related to this subject which unfortunately are not too well known to the public at large.

First let me check this with you readers out there: Do you remember your first mobile phone? A look-a-like of the phone Don Johnson had in Miami Vice? Or the one MacGyver used for disarming that bomb? Or that really really old Nokia phone, that didn't quite fit into your pocket, and was the major cause of hernia around the globe...

Today AmLab, short for Amsterdam Lab, opens its doors. AmLab (@Am_Lab) is founded by Text to Change, akvo.org and 1%CLUB who decided to join forces and build an Innovation Lab for Web and Mobile for International Development in Amsterdam. The location is stunning – the former Dutch West Indian Trading Company headquarters in Amsterdam, built in 1642.
