A new report by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) on mobile applications in East Africa examines the mobile landscape and applications offered – from health to finance and governance – the barriers to delivery, and approaches to successfully scaling-up applications beyond the pilot stage.

Together with Zonzoo and Effectory we started a fundraising campaign in the Netherlands among companies and individuals and try to raise as many mobile phones as possible. It's an effective campaign for every company, very simple and it will not cost time or money!

In 2008 there were approximately 370 million mobile subscribers in Sub-Saharan Africa. That's 4 out of 10 Africans. In 2010 it is expected that 6 out of 10 Africans will have a mobile phone. Mobile phone subscriptions levels are rising rapidly all over the world. Since 2000 the number of subscribers has almost tripled, rising from around 720 million to over 2 billion. The spread of mobile phones has been most rapid in those regions where usage was previously limited. Therefore we believe that mobile telephony is providing all the ingredients to bridge the digital divided.
